Ground Transportation for Thailand

Options for traveling within Thailand for a 21-day period

Outline

  1. Car
  2. Train / Bus / Air
  3. Other Options
  4. Estimate of total ground travel expenses

Car

There are many different rental car companies in Thailand, with the cheapest option I could find, for the whole 21 days, being a total of $333.11.

Train / Bus / Air

My mass transit options are train, bus, and/or air travel. the cheapest train travel was $28, the cheapest bus travel was $19, and the cheapest air travel within the country was $30. Most other options in these sectors however weren't that much more expensive. According to my Lonely Planet Travel Guide there are new railways that have been built, however trains are not as popular to travel long distances as they will take much longer than just flying. Also according to my travel guide, Thailand has great public transportation that many people choose to use while visiting.

Other options

Motorcycle and Ferry seemed to be other popular ways of travel around. For the motorcycle rental it came out to about 2,000 baht a week which is about $62.95 and for three weeks that about $188.85. For the ferry's it was dependent on where the ferry was going, however length of stay didn't change of the pricing, the cheapest trip was $32.16 (round-trip). According to my travel guide, ferries are quite popular when going between mainland Thailand and it's surrounding islands, as you get a beautiful scenic look around, and most ferries will have accomidations such as food and bathrooms on board.

Estimate of total ground travel expenses

The total cost of traveling within Thailand for a three week period (with everything above included) is $631.12. However, renting a motorcycle and a car is rather unreasonable. I would also rather just use public transportation, since buses could be used for shorter distances and trains and air travel could be used for longer distances. If I were to travel by bus, train, plane, and ferry the cost would be around: $109.13, however that would only be for one use of each (round-trip).
